It's been announced this morning that the UK Government plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2040 in favour of electric vehicles. Exact details are to be confirmed, but it does raise questions around consumers' appetite for electric vehicles, how dealers will sell them (or direct B2C, or a pay-as-you-go rental scheme and so on), and whether the UK will have an effective infrastructure to support a new widespread format of vehicle propulsion. Manufacturers are already pressing ahead with their electrification plans and are well-progressed on the road to removing diesel/petrol entirely from their ranges. This won't happen overnight, but it seems the UK Government is committed to playing its part in cleaning up air quality in our most congested towns and cities.
