Uber’s entrance into "local logistics" didn’t surprise many – it was merely seen as an extension of their taxi offering. However, their recent move into the €800bn long-haul trucking industry demonstrates the potential of disruptive technology in logistics, as I highlighted in my recent blog.

Currently operating in Texas, Uber is aiming to connect companies shipping across the US with truckers. The truckers are offered a list of available cargos with destinations and pay, levelling the playing field by providing a competitive environment and reducing the vast commissions typically paid to brokers.

Amazon is also said to be working on a similar app to compete in the “middle-mile” space. This is the latest in Amazon’s rumoured plan to become a full-scale, tech-driven logistics company.

Traditional logistics providers which don’t embrace technology to offer convenient and cost effective services will surely be left behind by these disruptive players who can seemingly create a perfectly efficient marketplace.
